Cracker "loser" a grateful dead cover song .... 12/27/07 The Independent San Fran ca
1st heard this cover around 1994 or so, KROQ Acoustic Christmas in LA, brings back some memories, awesome cover, glad they still play it!
Ditto...a great job. Johnny Hickman is a tremendous player...
Is David playing an Ibanez Jet King?
what a great song
Sure looks like a Jet King to me. I have one just like it. Changed the pickups and it plays and sounds pretty good.
Very nice version of loser...should be mentioned it is not only a cover of the Dead, but the Dead got it from the catalog of Robert Johnson (Last Fair Deal Gone Down). The origins of this song are not 30 years old, but more like 90 years old!
This is not a Robert Johnson song. At best, it can be argued that Robert Hunter wrote the lyrics with the same theme in mind.
that's not right. Robert hunter wrote the words and jerry garcia wrote the music
Hence the suggestion that the Robert Johnson song was the "origin"
great band keeping the good music alive awseom job keep on playing im starting my own band soon hope ill make it as good as yall
Not to argue a moot point, but the songs don't sound the same, nor are there any other lyrical connections other than the "last fair deal" stuff.
Intriguing info . Im gonna look at the Robert Johnson bit , cause it looks like you may be right . many Dead songs had their roots in earlier or foreign musics from Ireland etc
I love Loser , my fave version , the Garcia album from 1972 , Park city UT Aug 20 , 1987 . And Cornell Univeristy May 8 , 1977 amongst other versions . And this Cracker one now .. they just jammed it and jamed it .
Thanks for posting , and very good camera work as well
I love shows at the Independent. Crack rocks as it is, but this show must have been great. I got to see Johnny Hickman play at the Hotel Utah once and the rest of Cracker were there. Good times.
I've never heard of this band before, but great cover. I was taken a bit by surprise! Thanks for this.
Such a nice rendition of this tune. Saw them last night doin Kerosene Hat in it's entirety as well as Key Lime Pie it was awsome, Dave is such a great songwriter.
@guyfidelity he didn't write this song
@borabora2go Yeah I know it's a Dead tune, should have saved my Dave is a great songwriter comment for one of his own tunes.
@InfinityOE Kerosene Hat is a great album.
I know its a Grateful Dead song, but they play it so nice just the same, thumbs up to the Dead for allowing it, thats the style of the GD, they let people record at there shows, I think they were happy to share EVERYTHING, god bless Jerry. Hes gone but never forgotten.
awesome cover. I think a little more energy on "Last Fair Deal in the Country" towards the end of the song would add a bit more, but then again, a cover is open for interpretation and one's own stylistic input.
