Grateful Dead - Big River

Celebrating the 35th anniversary of the spectacular Wall of Sound, we invite you on a sonic excursion into back-to-back shows from June of '74. Propelled by the heart-thumping power of the Wall, these shows capture the band during a period of heightened intensity and brilliant musicianship.

Disc one finds the Wall of Sound towering over the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa for a Thursday, June 16th show that's loaded with beautifully inventive jams and inspired transitions. Amazing moments abound, like the 29-minute odyssey of "Playing In The Band" that blissfully dives into space and brings us back again. Disc two picks up two days later at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. This legendary setlist includes a brain-melting jam that rolls from "Weather Report Suite" through "It's A Sin."

Once again Jeffrey Norman has worked his magic on the soundboard masters so we can experience all this classic Dead in crisp-and-clear HDCD. The set also comes with an essay by Dennis McNally and of course photos of the band - and their mighty Wall of Sound.

    Jerry's looking at Hornsby and you can see he approves. Very nice piano Bruce.

  2. buchananstreet says:

    @mcdstuff , difficult for me to say this but ....they seem so SATURATED, so utterly bored ( with excpetion of that drummer), so fat and slick - its the opposite of what once was aspired at ! we want rough, rugged, wild, skinny, energetic rock stars and not fat, bored, condescent multi billionaires who turn out to be totally broke on top ( as it turned out after jerry garcias death)..all this seems so...SELF INDULGENT! ps: the DEAD have ZADILLIONS OF FANTASTIC TUNES, though!)

  3. buchananstreet says:

    pps: listening to grateful dead TODAY ( 2011) . hm, hm, hm ...its hard to say what one feels ..I once saw garcias acoustic band live in san francisco one night and he was FAT , real FAT but the music was swingin along quite well. theres nothing wrong with being FAT but HIS fatness had something of .... spoiltness, boredom, saturatedness ....too much of a good livin ....losing touch with ground, I feel ....also their eternal COVERVERSIONS, why that??! HARD TO HANDLE yet is GREAT

    @buchananstreet
    I don't think you know quite exactly what you're talking about.
    Rough, rugged, wild, skinny, energetic rock stars sometimes grow up to be portly. It happens with people sometimes. Regardless Jerry never stopped being a great musician, and the band itself evolved.
    I never like those stickers that said "the fat man rocks", always thought that was disrespectful.

    @buchananst "their eternal COVERVERSIONS, y that?!"

    I'll pretend this is a real Q, & not a disguised whine.
    A: The Dead r the quintessential (2 big? "ultimate") American band.
    Came from many traditions (folk-country-blues-gospel-r&b-jazz-reggae-rock+) & created new ones (psychedelia, jam-band). They take old standards & their forebears’ great works, & remake them as their own - AND wrote >150 original songs, many = masterworks covered in turn by many other artists.
    That about cover it 4 u?

  21. carlogesualdo25 says:

    @smartalek1 hahhahahahah wellll said!!!

  22. 60458 says:

    RIP Jerry August 9, 1995 To the world you are one, to the music world you will never be matched. You were taken from us way too young.

  23. ycomp says:
