Grateful Dead - Franklin's Tower

Only the second Dick's Picks set to come from the 1990s, Volume 17 comes from the middle of a six-night run at Boston Garden and boasts a prominent and playful Bruce Hornsby, who by this point had become fully integrated (along with keyboardist Vince Welnick) into the band's sound. The first set especially finds the band as tight and together as they ever were in the '90s. As an added bonus, the third disc adds a pair of strong tunes from a Greensboro, North Carolina, show from the previous March, including a marathon "Eyes of the World." When looked at in the context of the Dead's entire career, this date doesn't really stand out, but as a characteristic document of Hornsby's early-1990s tenure, it works just fine--and it's definitely a cut above Volume 9, the other '90s-era Dick's Pick set. --Marc Greilsamer

Hard to watch. 91 was the end. After that, these shows just lost their sparkle.

    This was a good show!!!

It's like he couldn't find the notes with a searchlight. It is sad.
I was at Franklin Cty. show in VT a couple weeks before he passed-an ok show, but again the steam was leaking out of the pipes for sure.

There was no one like Jerry ever, never will be again. Yeah, he was down that summer but if you live to be that old you can find yourself that down and yet still come back again.

Sadly for us, this was not his fate.

Man, how I miss him but I also will forever hold the joy that he brought to me and all of us who were along for that great ride.

If you were there you knew the heart and soul of that man; he gave us his all. And that memory is a beautiful thing.

    Thanks for posting this.

It is sad to watch. On the one hand being in a room with Jerry was good enough but then you look at some of the vids from the 70's and its just heartbreaking to see the decline in his playing. To me that is what is excruciatingly sad. He did not go out on top of his game but he deserved to, and that is a shame.

sometimes I feel like it was all of us who led Jerry to his ultimate fate

    idk

I think the dead's fans loved Jerry and supported him, I don't think they had any negative pull on him.

  10. Lloydstrom says:

its heart breaking too see how bad of shape Jerry was in. He basically isnt even playing on this. The man gave his life to his music and the well-being of others. great piece of Grateful Dead history. id still take ANY '95 show over ANY so-called Dead show now. Jerry Garcia was the Grateful Dead.

  11. bones2900 says:

You can definitely tell Jerry isn't well.

  12. acachubaca says:

I was at this show, gave a miracle to a hottie Dead Head girl who made the whole night! Show was amazing. drum circle during intermission was insano!!! I almost lost my mind. If you love(d) the Dead it really didn't matter whether they were on or off, because as long as they went ON, then it was ALL Good!!!

  13. mrfox50 says:

@midnightjam it was and always was about the music man. not the money, sorry i just dissagree.
