    Wow is all of 1982 this good? I am a new Deadhead and have only really listened to early-90's-late 80's and late 60's-early 70's so far. I listened to 10/10/82 this morning and it is magnificent!! Any other '82 or other early 80 shows I should get?

    82 is the BEST.
    try 04-15, 04-17, 04-18, 04-26, 08-10, 09-17, 09-20, 09-21, 12-31.

    @DoctorSapperstein Wow thank you! I am currently reading Blair Jackson's Garcia biography and in it he says that in spite of popular thought, the band actually improved more and more each year from 1980-1985, as in they got better year by year. If so then do you have any good 1983-'84 shows to recommend to a new Deadhead?

    Definitely agree on the early 80s being way underrated -- and the show picks below are great! The thing about the GD is that great shows were so transcendent and over-the-top amazing that if a show didn't quite get to that point, it could seem like an "off night" ... but still fun from the floor! So there were a fair number of off nights at that point, but also some incredible stuff to make you smile smile smile :-)

    Yes, 1982 was by far and away the best year for the Dead although '87, '89, '93, and to some extent '85 were also good. Some say Ventura, July 18, 1982 was the best show ever.

    Personally I'll take 12/05/81 over anything in '82 (not that '82 is bad, far from it). My favorite years right now are 1969 and 1970 tho '72 to '77 and the early '80s are high quality too. Many people think '77 was their best year. 1989 had some monster shows, 7/18,19 at Alpine Valley immediately come to mind. After Brent died in 1990 there are some excellent shows too but the band got increasingly spotty. But there are great shows in almost every year, preference is a matter of taste.

    I'm partial to the seventies - especially 1972.

    @deadheadCO fatty? local area slang?

  12. deadheadCO says:

    @jimothy60 i guess...

    C'mon bro after alpine valley,shoreline with clarence clemons and the 3rd night at the greek ,most of '89 was average at best.You also say that after brent passed there was some"excellent" shows would you mind pointing them out because i am having a hard time trying to remember them maybe because there was none. You say great shows in every year,'91 had none,'92 had none,"93 had none,"94 and "95 absolutely positively had none.You are right "to each his own" but the '90's were pathetic.

  14. TGSTim says:

    The 90's were hit and miss but there were some great shows. Granted, it wasn't the '70's but there were really good moments. Not the moments where Jerry forgot words, or the moments where he got lost in his guitar. Not the moments where Weir played loud, inappropriately or sang like a cheeseball (he always did). But there were some golden moments in 93 and 94 at the Oakland coliseum where they all, just for a moment, nailed a song together and reminded you what a freaky, magical and wonderful s

    sixth night, second set, third song, eighth bar, third note! Outdoors, post thunderstorm, partly cloudy...but not more than thirty percent. Third time played, audience dub, with 90 minute chrome tape re-recorded in 7/8 speed while on speed . bottle wash redub with a half capp and a frapback. Open tuning and stepped down a fret in subtle humidity and 700 mic's of Owsley. Medium pic with lightwieght strings in a soundproof hexagon room under sodium lights with Vaurnet's and white widow.spliced in

  18. theMNjeddler says:

    wow... that was a rippin' cold rain

  19. lilac321able says:
