Grateful Dead - Althea - July 19, 1989 Footage

Grateful Dead - Althea

summer dead at alpine valley '89. Jerry and the band in one of their greatest string of late shows. This phenomenal, rare pro footage was shot for the making of "Downhill from Here"-- this track however did surprisingly not make the final cut onto the resulting dvd.

actually, I mentioned that because in fact the "Downhill" dvd does feature a few tunes from this night, including an outstanding "deal." Your point about the dead video taping their shows is well taken though-- I just meant to remark on the pro quality of the footage and it never being officially released. Thanks for watching my friend.

Yep, it's been far too long since I saw "Downhill...", you're right the last three songs of the first set are from the 19th (West LA, Desolation Row, & Deal). The rest of the DVD is from the 17th, all that's missing is Row Jimmy, Masterpiece, PushShove, & MNS. Sorry about that.

There's literally miles of pro shot footage from Jerry's last decade or so, not sure how much of it is actually edited together though. Gotta get out & see current lineup, I hear they're the nug. :)

This is the best Althea I've ever heard or seen!!! Thanks for putting it on here. Althea's always been my favorite song by my favorite band!!! So maybe my favorite song of all time! I was lucky enough to see Jerry & the boys play it 7 times total; between 12/89 to 12/94. (Favorite song has to be: either Althea or Shakedown!)(Or: Time or Learning to Fly ; by Pink Floyd)It's hard to pick a favorite song of all time!!!

@vaultdweller125 what kind of proof do you have to back up that statement with? Not trying to say you are wrong, but I would be interested in how you know

@setboy1 Not sure exactly which of my three comments you’re referring to, but I’ll take a stab at it anyway. Most every GD show I ever went to (over 100 shows from ’83 to ’95), there was a film crew present, with multiple cameramen, shooting the entire show. How I know this is simple; I was there and saw the film crews shooting the shows. Some of the video has been officially released, but most of it hasn’t. There’s quite a bit of this GD concert video on youtube, much more than any other band.

  6. vaultdweller125 says:

@setboy1 Just look around, most youtube GD videos with editing & multiple camera angles were shot by the band. I count at least 10 links to such videos from the ‘80’s & 90’s on this page alone. If that’s not enough proof, then consider that the surest way to get kicked out of a Dead show (even today) is to get caught shooting video of the show. The Dead are hard-core about the rights to video of their shows, and were even back when I was going to see them.
