Live At Watkins Glen- Promised Land- Grateful Dead Online Video

Grateful Dead - Promised Land

This was done at the Watkins Glen Festival ,Watkins Glen, NY in late July 1973. Three bands performed which were The Band, Grateful Dead, and Allman Brothers. Like Woodstock it was a three day event but over 600000 people made it to the event beating Woodstock by over 200000. Every band came on and did a soundcheck for the audience that were already at the event days in advance. The Grateful Dead's soundcheck turned into a two hour set with 11 songs including a couple lengthy jams. Here's the first song from the Grateful Dead's "soundcheck" Promiced Land.

Just to clarify something, UNLIKE Woodstock, the Summer Jam was a ONE Day event and NO, the Youngbloods were NOT there.

Four of us from Brookville,PA drove up in a little white Mustang that we had to park about halfway up "The Hill" due a hot clutch. It was just dusk as we started on up over the hill and along "the Road". We moved in until we reached a point where there was no room between the people to go any further. We backed ourselves up against a cyclone fence, hung a big flag upside down for shade and
took in the sights for the day. We were filmed and interviewed by a camera crew. There is more footage.

hs is right My brother and I and two other guys road up from NC I was 20 We thought we were going to have to pay to get in but no worries all the fences were torn down.
We had to hike all the way up the hill. The Band was playing when we got there. What a burn out concet. I will always remember all the wild events of that day. The Almond Bros jamed well into early hours the next morning. What a great day

I was there...19 damn years old. All the way from Fort Erie. Over the Peace Bridge at Buffalo and we was GONE.
Man, raindrops the size of nickles. The Band was jammin the intro to Chest Fever to the oncoming storm. Sureal.
600 thousand souls will never forget that hot hot weekend in upstate NY.

I was there. we pitched a tent about 200 feet from the front of the stage. We walked about 5 miles to get in. We tried to get closer but we just stopped and the cops came out and said just park, so we did. I had just graduated from high school. that summer was the best I had. I saw the dead at least 3 times and the Band 2 times. It seems strange that there was so many people there and only a bit over 2000 have found this vid. an important event in my life

I was there with 5 friends from Boston. we pitched an 8-man tent, also about 200 feet from the stage. the reason the tents were pitched at that distance is it was the last dry spot. between us and the stage was a valley of mud, a pit really, full of muddy people. we arrived Friday. Saturday morning I opened the tent flap and saw a seaof bodies in every direction. I remembered a wine bottled in my pack, full of coffee. even at luke warm, it was the best coffee I ever tasted!

Wow!!! I was sitting here feeling bad but this has lifted me! i went to this event with my girlfriend, later my wife, in the summer before I started medical school. It was an amazing time in life and the world and this concert has never received its due. My girlfriend and I parked a few miles away and hiked to the concert ground Friday night. We set up our pup-tent as the Allman Brothers and the Dead did their sound-checks, which were in reality more like concerts in themselves! Thanks for this!

This is so bitchen! I was there, also. I was backstage, and was given a pad, my "job" was to stand at the link fence and proceed to take the names of lost souls, and the names would be announced on stage between bands. Now, all who were there know what a task this was!!! We had to stop at about 5,000, about 3 hrs into the start of the music. Unreal. This concert for all who do not know, was the biggest in history. More than Woodstock. Anyone remember The Youngbloods were there also?? I do!
